The content of our curriculum is what children learn. Experts have developed standards defining what children should know and be able to do by certain grade levels. State and local school districts have adapted these standards. Our curriculum is guided by state mandated standards. Because of these standards, the knowledge base in each content area is more systematic. Our curriculum integrates many areas around a topic of interest. Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies become relevant to our children when topics relate on a personal level.

Literacy - The study of Literacy includes vocabulary and language, phonological awareness, letters and words, knowledge of print, comprehension, understanding books and other texts, and reading for enjoyment.

Mathematics - Math includes numbers, patterns and relationships, geometry and spatial awareness, measurement, data collection, organization, and representation.

Science - In science we learn about the physical properties of objects, living things, the earth and the environment.

Social Studies - Social Studies include how people live, work, get along with others, shape and are shaped by their surroundings.

Judaic Studies - The children are surrounded by the study of the Chagim, Parsha, and immersion in the Hebrew language. We learn daily tefilot and brachot in connection with Shabbat, Chagim, and eating. Parshat Hashavua introduces children to stories from the Torah and serves to instill in them some of the ethical and moral values of Judaism. Many mitzvot and midot are introduced through discussions relating to people and stories in the parsha.

Physical Education - The physical activities that are part of the nursery curriculum give children an opportunity to explore and expand their physical capacity, and learn how to control their bodies. They develop their motor coordination, and engage in activities that require using their gross and fine motor skills. The physical education program strongly emphasizes learning to play well together before children learn to play well against each other in competitive activities. By postponing the experiences of winning and losing the program helps children learn to be more relaxed and more willing to take risks and more focused on learning strategies.

Woven throughout the curriculum is information about how the body works. Also, throughout the day, children are taught basic health and cleanliness habits.

Art - The preschool art program offers the children a multitude of enjoyable new experiences. They learn the concept of open ended art where they are encouraged to create independently. For example, before Succot the four year old nursery children made hanging sculptures. They were exposed to many different media of which they were able to select and place wherever they pleased. The kindergarten children beaded and weaved their own hanging decoration, giving them the opportunity to express their individuality. Most importantly at Lev Chana, each child is praised for their creativity and their personal accomplishments.

Library - Every week each class has the opportunity to visit the library. There they are treated to a special story, interactive puppet show or participate in word and number games. Every month your child will bring home a Scholastic Book Order Form. You will be able to purchase books to increase your child’s personal library at home. The library offers some special projects and trips planned for our children. Our library program also includes the addition of educational computer games available in each classroom.
